Poker Glossary - Terms and Lingo

Glossary is one of the most important points in any gambling game. Sure you cannot learn any strategies or tips, cannot use card counting game variations if you do not know the meaning of this or that term, especially you can't play winning poker without the knowledge of the terms.

Action

The player’s turn to act in the round of betting.

Ante

The compulsory bet placed by all the poker players before the cards are dealt.

All-In

To bet all the chips into the pot by betting, raising or calling.

Bad beat

When the poker player loses in spite of high probabilities in his/her favor.

Big blind

The forced bet posted by the second poker player after the button.

Blank

The weak community card that can not help any gambler in the hand.

Boat

Second name for the Full House.

Bottom pair

When the weakest card on the board and your lowest pocket card create pair.

Bubble

The placings at poker tournament that do not get any prizes.

Burn

To discard the top card of deck just before dealing the community cards.

Button

The special mark that indicates that poker player is in the dealer’s place.

Buy-in

The fee to enter the poker tournament.

Call

To match previously made raise or bet.

Calling station

The player who calls and rarely raises and bets.

Check

To skip the turn to place bet with not wagering any amount to the pot. It is allowed to check just if the bet wasn’t posted before.

Connector

The starting hand that contains two or more cards in sequence.

Dead money

Money contributed into the pot by poker player who isn’t in the hand.

Draw

The hand which can be quite strong in case some specific cards appear on the board.

Draw dead

The hand that has low probabilities to win anyway (also used in online casino.

Fast play

Aggressive poker play with many bets and raises.

Fish

Bad gambler.

Flop

The name for first community cards in the game.

Freeroll

The kind of poker tournaments with no the buy-ins.

Gutshot straight

Not completed straight hand which requires one particular card.

Heads-up

The poker game with only two participants.

Kicker

The unpaired card in the hand that is used to break the ties.

Maniac

Muck

Monster

Out

Pot limit

Betting structure which allows the players to raise and bet up to the amount of whole pot.

Small blind

The type of the compulsory bet placed by the first player after the dealer’s position. The small blind is the half of big blind amount.

Split pot

The poker pot divided between the players who hold the hands with the same value.

Suited

The starting hand that consists of two cards with one suit.

Tilt

To lose patience in the game cause of great losses and make mistakes.

Turn

The fourth community card.
